This consists of at least the economic, social, and environmental pillars. If anyone pillar is weak then the system as a whole is unsustainable. Two popular ways to visualize the three pillars are shown.

Economic sustainability:

The general definition of economic sustainability is the ability of an economy to support a defined level of economic production indefinitely.

Environmental sustainability

Definition of environmental sustainability. A state in which the demands placed on the environment can be met without reducing its capacity to allow all people to live well, now and in the future.

Social Sustainability:

Social sustainability is about identifying and managing business impacts, both positive and negative, on people. The quality of a company’s relationships and engagement with its stakeholders is critical. Directly or indirectly the companies affect what happens to employees, workers in the value chain, customers and local communities, and it is important to manage impacts proactively.
